It sounds like the lips have taken up smoking on their own, like a horror movie where the transplanted hand of a serial killer turns an innocent man into a murderer.

At any rate, the doctors shouldn’t be too scandalized. The woman is French after all. The freedom to smoke was probably her reason for getting a face transplant in the first place.
