The Nantes Jules Verne Festival

Jules Verne Festival Last week, Bre linked to an amazing set of photos from the recent Jules Verne Festival in Nantes, France. The main event featured a Gigantic Steampunk rocket, from which a space-traveling puppet emerged. There are even more pictures available now. Check these out. Oh my god! I don’t want to fetishize European culture at the expense of our own, but is public art in America ever this grandiose or imaginative? Nope.

It should be. I want to see a 40 foot tall Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox walking the Minnesota countryside.

And so do I. Especially since it would be in my neck of the woods. But it is highly unlikely to happen.

But I really would have enjoyed bearing witness to what happened at Nantes. Sigh.

Yeah. There needs to be more of the surreal in american public life…I mean the intentional surrealism, not the increasingly common what the fuck were they thinking, “I’m moving to Canada” kind.

  3. Sharyn Says:

    Exactly.
