Our Shallow Past

Pat Kanim, Snoqualmie ChiefIt’s tempting to think of west coast cities as having no deep and interesting past. After all, most of them have been around for only 150 years or so and their cultural depth seems small compared to the metropolises of the east coast and older cities in europe and elsewhere. When I travel, I think a lot about the personalities of cities. The combination of community, popular imagination, and sense of place that turns a collection of buildings and people into a living, breathing organism.

I’m headed off to NYC next week, but before I get seduced by it’s gigantic personality, I’ve been interested in finding out a little more about Seattle, to try and pin down what she’s all about or at least where she came from.
