Roxy Music

I’ve spent a lot of my music listening life rolling my eyes at Roxy Music. I mean, c’mon…isn’t Bryan Ferry just a poor woman’s David Bowie? However, when Brian Eno was in the band, things were far more interesting.

Joseph, you must be on the young side. Had you been around during the 70s, you would have known that Bowie stole well and wholeheartedly from Ferry and Roxy. In fact, as I recall, Bryan was reportedly a bit bent out of shape by David’s…’borrowings’. Personally, i thought both of them were absolutely amazing. Bowie hopscotched all over the musical map to great effect, while Ferry put out a decade-long string of LPs with Roxy that are both distinctive and clearly evolutionary from one to the next. While Bowie seems to go basically unnoticed outside of fashion circles (even though he’s put out some great music in the past 10 years, IMHO), Ferry is lionized in Britain and is the star of an upscale Marks and Spencer ad campaign. ‘The Independent’ called him ‘the coolest man in England’ at 60 years old, and a study in graceful aging. Well, both these guys have done that, I think. Moreso than I have, at any rate!

Duly noted, John. FYI, I was around in the seventies, but was more concerned with Star Wars and Dungeons and Dragons than glam.

Anyway, while Bryan Ferry may have aged well, his music has not. Brian Eno and David Bowie on the other hand…
