Viva La Rollerderby
Saturday night was bout 6 of Rat City Rollergirls and I can now honestly say that I’m hooked on the sport. Furthermore, while I love all of teams in our local league, The Sockit Wenches have captured my rollerderby loyalty thru a combination of plucky underdog determination, heart, and the amazing abilities of star jammer Miss Fortune.
However, I do have a piece of constructive criticism for rollerderby fans:
While a big part of rollergirl events is hokum and theatrics and I know that we tend to create heroes and villains in our sporting events, booing teams is not cool. The best thing about rollerderby, aside from the violence and rad outfits, is the supportive atmosphere and and sportspersonship (synonym, anyone? ack!) These ladies play their heart out for us every month or so and we should all pay them the proper respect.
The Rollergirls are taking the month of August off, but you owe it to yourself to check them out at the September semi-final.
Lastly, Michael Coyote captured the event with a great set of photos. Dammit, Pop Astronaut needs a new camera with a freaking optical zoom, stat!
