Studio Ghibli is making Tales from Earthsea!!!

EarthseaHoly crap! Studio Ghibli (Howl’s Moving Castle, Spirited Away, Grave of the Fireflies) is adapting Ursula K. LeGuin!

Hayao Miyazaki isn’t directing, but Ghibli films are almost always great. Tales from Earthsea comes out in Japan in Summer 2006 and hopefully will erase my memories of the horrible Earthsea mini-series the Sci-fi Network aired earlier this year.

That’s about the best news I’ve heard all week.

The husband and I are very excited (and, thankfully, we skipped the Sci-Fi Network miniseries altogether, especially after reading Ms. LeGuin’s rant about how badly they warped her work). And this movie will be directed by Hayao Miyazaki’s son…so hopefully he has some of Dad’s talent.

Children of geniuses are a mixed bag, but dad’s producing and Miyazaki-san doesn’t strike me as the indulgent type, so I have high hopes. The sci-fi series was absoltutely mind-numbingly horrible, so you didnt miss anything.

I can’t wait till it comes out in the US in 2009. Hoorah!
