They’re Coming To Get You Barbara!

Over the weekend in San Francisco, the flash mob returned in force as an ad hoc group of "zombies" shambled down the street and "attacked" bystanders, passing out materials to create even more zombies to join in the fun.
Derek Powazek took some great photos of the event.

Bookworm Field Trips

Public service announcement time. Both Chuck Klosterman and Neil Gaiman are going to be in town soon to promote Killing Yourself to Live and Anansi Boys, respectively. They’ll be reading, hawking their wares, and answering questions from the local nerd squad (myself included).
Since Neil Gaiman is booked at Kane Hall, I wonder […]

Vile Bumbershoot

Bumbershoot is usually an evil, frenzied experience filled with enough loud noises, bad smells, and crowds to make the most outgoing person into a sweaty, hyperventilating agoraphobe. This year however, Mrs. Astronaut, myself and some of our amigos were going to break down and subject ourselves to the horrors of Seattle Center in order […]

He’s Crafty

Blogging Baby has a great primer on making your own children’s books. While the article focuses on making kid’s books, which is an amazing idea all on it’s own, these tutorials could inspire beginning bookmakers (like me) to create books for kids of all sizes.

We Are The Media

Bre Pettis is a renaissance man. Teacher, videoblogger, artist, puppeteer…is there nothing this man cannot accomplish? Apparently not because not only does he have a great haircut, he’s also the founder of We Are The Media, a daily news site for the vlogging world. I’m lucky enough to have been invited to […]

El Chupacabra est maléfico

El Chupacabra, on Phinney Ridge has good drinks, yummy food, one of the best jukeboxes in the city, and an outdoor deck perfect for lounging in the summer sun with friends. Sounds perfect, right? Not so much.
While all this is true, El Chupacabra also boasts some of the worst bartending and table […]

Viva La Rollerderby

Saturday night was bout 6 of Rat City Rollergirls and I can now honestly say that I’m hooked on the sport. Furthermore, while I love all of teams in our local league, The Sockit Wenches have captured my rollerderby loyalty thru a combination of plucky underdog determination, heart, and the amazing abilities of star […]

Where Do Legos Come From?

I fondly remember all the important mysteries from my childhood; "Where do babies come from?", "If I close my eyes, can you still see me?","Is there a giant, underground goblin kingdom underneath my parents house?", and most important "Where do Legos come from?". In adulthood, sadly, many of these questions have been answered and […]

Let Freedom Ring

Starting tomorrow, Washington will become the 33rd state in the union to allow liquor sales on Sunday. This is a great day for our fair state and ushers in a new era of convenience for yours truly. Now I can observe the Sabbath and enjoy my Sunday morning Jaagermeister in peace. Let […]

The Stranger’s Film Reviews

The following is excerpted from this week’s Letters Page in The Stranger:
"It’s not just that I disagree with the <film> critics, even though I do. It’s that nobody writing for your newspaper seems to be out to say who might enjoy the film and who should steer clear. Nope, instead we get idiots who seem […]
