Jack Handey, Jack Handey, give me some candy!

McSweeney’s has a great Halloween story today. Snip:
“They say I can turn into a bat. I can, but not very well. What I am probably best at is wandering into a party and transforming myself into someone who looks like he might have been invited. And woe to him who fingers me as an […]

Fear

Molly Holzschlag’s recent post about fear struck me like a brick. In the aftermath of losing a father and watching a close friend lose her brother, I’ve been living pretty closely with fear over the past month. It sounds simple but fear is the biggest part of losing someone and the hardest emotion […]

+cruz

I guess it’s cartoon day here on Pop Astronaut. +cruz’s video for Hifana’s Wamono is a cool, frenetic slice of animation. +cruz is a part of British production house Love and most of their members have work that is worth a look.
Their website, while beautiful, is also a good object lesson on the […]

Channel Frederator

What’s the killer app for the new web? Right-wing political nut-jobs? Nope. Fruitcake recipes? Nuh-uh. Navel-gazing videoblogs? Nooo (sorry Bre)!!! The best thing about the new-fangled interweb is…
Cartoons!
That’s right, dear reader, talking animals, lovelorn cavemen, and cool, french modsters are poised to take over. I just had my […]

The Goblins ‘ll git you

When I was in elementary school, our music teacher taught us a song that had such a profound effect on my imagination (and nightmares) that my mom, tired of me sleeping outside her bedroom door, had to go to the teacher and ask her to talk to me about it. The song was based […]

Meme: Do the shuffle

Robot Johnny (of Drawn! fame) just dropped a meme and I can’t resist. Snip:
“Because it’s a slow day, it’s time to revisit the Shuffle! Everyone play along — mp3 player, random play, first 15 tracks, embarrassment be damned!”
I narrowly missed some embarassing songs, but I’ve been culling iTunes lately, so I was prepared. Here’s […]

Readymech

These Readymech papercraft toys are so freakin cool. Take 5 minutes, a little patience, and some decent paper and you’ve got a new desktop minion to push around. I think Skeletron is my favorite, but the 2001-inspired PAL 9000 comes in a close second.

Ashley Wood

While meandering around the web this morning, I ran across the portfolio of illustrator Ashley Wood. I love his work and think I’ll try to track down some of his comics.

The Memorial

My dad’s memorial service was this afternoon and I’m still reeling a bit.  Terry, the minister at Bellevue Presbyterian Church presided over a touching celebration of his life and hopefully brought comfort and some small measure of closure to a lot of people, myself included.
The Seattle Times posted a couple of obituaries about my dad.  […]

War Photographer

Talking and alcohol just aren’t enough to make me feel better right now. I need the healing power of cartoons.
If Samurai Jack wandered into a sea battle battle fought by heavy metal, soul vikings, the result might be something like Joel Trussell’s War Photographer. Oh, did I mention the giant robots? Giant, […]

My dad

My dad died this morning.
I’m in shock…sort of okay on the surface, but big tectonic plates are rumbling and shifting somewhere in the basement. I’ve never been through anything remotely like this before and I’m both scared and curious about everything. From moment to moment, I find myself unable to predict how I’ll […]

Growing up

My father is in bad shape. I know that I’ll get to a point where writing about it, or at least writing about something, will make me feel better, but I’m going to be away from the keyboard for a few days while I let the shock settle inside me. Thanks for sticking […]

Waiter Rant turns a corner

I love blogs and the whole messy conversation that springs up around them, but lets be honest: Usually the blogs we read are full of short, conversational missives or isolated, albeit interesting, links without much personal context.
Waiter Rant is always funny, snarky, and a little lurid, but today The Waiter showed us what really […]

Church of Gaiman

I love author readings. I get to put a voice to the stories that run through my head, marvel at the sometimes insightful, sometimes unintentionally hilarious audience questions, and it usually provides an excuse to buy books. As if I need another excuse to buy books. However, I don’t love author signings.
I […]

Nicolas “Jor-El” Cage is a serial nerd

Reportedly, Nicolas Cage and his wife have named their new baby Kal-El, which you may remember is the Kryptonian birth name of Superman. One wonders if Mr. Cage’s previous marriages ended because Patricia Arquette and Lisa Marie Presley were smart enough to not let their husband give their child such a cringe-worthy name.
Hey, I’m […]
