A.C. Newman gives good playlist

Celebrity playlists on the iTunes music store are usually exercises in vanity with little redeeming value. I mean what the hell do I care which Cure song the Killers think is best and while Rupert Grint and Daniel Radcliffe are great as Harry and Ron, their playlist is only useful as a primer on […]

Hellboy To Be Animated

Holy crap! There’s a Hellboy animated series in the works. If you’re only familiar with Hellboy via the Guillermo del Toro feature film, you may have no clue why this excites me so much. The film was fun and interesting, but failed to capture the true glory of Mike Mignola’s wood-cut meets […]

Sweeney Todd

On Thursday night I was lucky enough to join L, Gigi, and the librarian for the 5th Avenue Theatre’s production of Sweeney Todd. I have a secret love for musical theatre and my pals were kind enough to offer up a ticket, so off I went.
Sweeney Todd is based on a story […]

More Terror from the Deep

Scientists in South America recently discovered the fossilized remains of a 13-foot, prehistoric eating machine they’ve nicknamed "Godzilla". Between this and the giant squid discovered by Japanese scientists last month, I may never go in the water again…or at least not in the North Pacific or during the Cretaceous period.

Michel Gagne

Michel Gagne’s Insanely Twisted Shadow Puppet shorts are brilliant and so very creepy. The thought that these were aired on kids’ tv network Nickelodeon boggles the mind. However, just the storyboards and soundtrack for Nightmare, the one featured short rejected by the network, froze my blood in it’s veins. Eek!

Can You Dig It?!!?

S and I watched The Warriors last night. It’s been 15 years since the last time I saw it and I was happy to find that it holds up pretty well. I remember it being violent and really frightening when I was 13, but I was afraid of clowns and got slammed up […]

Smoking Ban

So, the smoking ban passed yesterday and in 30 days it will be against the law to smoke inside or within 25 feet of a building in Seattle.
I smoke and I voted for the ban. Our legal system in general exists to balance individual rights with the public good. In this context, having […]

Chomp Champ

“Foodertainment” merchant…er, I mean burger chain (what the hell is foodertainment?), Ruby Tuesday is promoting their burgers with a gloriously silly flash game. Watching Abraham Lincoln out-eat Elvis is worth the click all by itself.
Chomp Champ’s the name puttin’ em away is the game!

Copy Goes Here

The raconteurs at Coudal Partners produced a beautiful Hal Hartley-esque film about the short, heartwarming tenure of their most recent copywriter. I highly recommend it to illiterate designers and those that love them. And of course, there is the obligatory, but puzzling companion dvd/tshirt set for sale at their shop.
Coudal Partners - Copy […]

Rogue Wave

Even though it’s been out for a few weeks now, Rogue Wave’s Descended Like Vultures deserves a special mention today for kicking my ass all morning. No hyperbole comes to mind, but it really is an amazing album.
Samples are available on the Sub Pop site.
