Untitled

Been feeling a little uninspired lately; hence the lack of posts. Been thinking about re-reading J.D. Salinger’s entire body of work. In other news, Thumbsucker and The Squid and the Whale restored my faith in movies this week.
More soon.

The Lost Generation

Sharyn’s post from yesterday set me thinking, a difficult job for me since I’d much rather be shoveling black licorice into my mouth and re-watching the same three episodes of Firefly over and over again.
Are we younger in our 30s than our parents’ generation?
Sometimes I convince myself that freedom of choice, emotional self-indulgence, the increased […]

Stinky

Seattle literally smelled like shit yesterday. It smelled it at work, it smelled on the way home, it smelled in my backyard across town. I was starting to worry, thinking something must be wrong with my nose, but S came to my rescue by passing this along:
Seattle PI - Nasty odor permeates Seattle
Thank god, […]

The ugly side of blogging

For the past few weeks, I’ve been enjoying Mimi in NY, a frank, sometimes lurid look at the life of a single girl in NYC. That is until she posted candid snapshots of strangers she met at the Hudson Bar accompanied by cruel, judgemental observations about their looks, weight, and intelligence. If these […]

Second acts

It’s amazing the little things you read and hear that get stuck in your head. My brain is filled with little quotes and values that sit in the back row and subtly influence my choices. That stupid, but strangely appealing quote from F. Scott Fitzgerald immediately comes to mind:
"There are no second acts […]

Red Eye

S and I watched Red Eye this morning. My expectations were low, but it turned out to be a good, Hitchcockian suspense thriller.
At this point, I’ll see anything with Cillian Murphy or Brian Cox. Both do sympathetic and creepy equally well.
I love watching movies on Saturday morning.

Eux Autres

I’m really enjoying Eux Autres‘ Hell is Eux Autres. A two-piece from Portland by way of Omaha, Eux Autres’ harmonies, handclaps, and surf-rock beats are irresistible. Anyone who doubts the power of music blogs should note how quickly I bought this after downloading a couple of freebies from their site.
Eux Autres - Official […]

Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends

My favorite show on tv isn’t Lost, Battlestar Galactica, Project Runway, or even The Office. No, my favorite show on television is undeniably Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends.
From Craig McKracken, creator of the Powerpuff Girls, Foster’s has amazing character design, clever yet slightly subversive humor, a great theme song (on kazoo no less) and […]

Those crazy French

Here’s the best news headline I’ve seen in a long time:
Transplanted lips used to start smoking
It sounds like the lips have taken up smoking on their own, like a horror movie where the transplanted hand of a serial killer turns an innocent man into a murderer.
At any rate, the doctors shouldn’t be too scandalized. The […]

Meme: Full disclosure

I’m owning up to the fact that I am becoming a meme slut. Via Chez Shoes:
What were you doing 9 years ago?
Finishing up my degree at Evergreen (5 year plan!), breaking up with my girlfriend (mistake!), and slowly going insane in wet, mossy Olympia.
What were you doing 6 years ago?
Working for the depressing corporate […]

Cory Doctorow’s Anda’s Game

Working my way through The Best American Short Stories 2005, I just finished Cory Doctorow’s Anda’s game, a story about girl power, morality, MMORPGs, and the global economy. It’s a loose riff on Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game and a great, cautionary but optimistic gem of a short story. I couldn’t help tearing-up a […]

Genre

I’ve been thinking a lot about genre lately. In part, to defend my love of fantasy and science fiction from the nay-sayers, but mostly to figure out my own biases when I’m comparing fictions to one another. You might say, since I’m not a professional writer or literary critic, that I should just […]

My laptop allergy

Somehow I’ve felt allergic to the laptop over the last few days, so please forgive my infrequent posts. Over the past few days, I’ve picked up the Michael Chabon edited 2005 Best American Short Stories and seen some amazing movies. Short stories are the perfect little capsules for my strangely shortened attention span […]

I heart Batgirl

One of my childhood (and current) crushes was the beautiful and capable Barbara Gordon, daughter of Commissioner Gordon and lovely alter-ego of Batgirl. Which is why this Livejournal meme makes me so happy.
Bryan O’Malley’s is my favorite (pictured).
