I’m spending the next few days at Flashforward which coincidentally is being held in our fair city this time around. Today was the first of three and has tons of cool stuff, but the best was the presentation by the creators of Homestar Runner.
Flashforward’s focus on creativity and storytelling makes the Actionscript tutorials and […]

Oh no! I can’t tell you how sad I was to read that Octavia Butler died yesterday. I’ve enjoyed so many of her novels and just recently finished Fledgling. Rest in peace, Ms. Butler.

I’m really excited for Richard Linklater’s film adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s A Scanner Darkly, but it looks like there’s been some trouble within the production.
What’s really fascinating about this Wired article is that Linklater chooses to talk to the press about his frustration, rather than smile and bullshit his way through in traditional Hollywood […]

The Henry Art Gallery here in Seattle has a Roy Lichtenstein exhibition opening this Friday and I think I gotta go. Even though pop art has started to seem a little trite as the years go by, I still love Lichtenstein’s vibrant prints. I haven’t been to the Henry for a long time. […]

With handsome, young, straight actors like Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal in the starring roles it’s inevitable that Brokeback Mountain enter pop culture consciousness as that movie about gay cowboys.
Admit it, whether you snicker at the thought of sex between men on a fishing trip or appreciate the deconstruction of the cowboy myth that this […]

I’ve never been so busy as I am this week. The puppy, while cute and occasionally fun, is more work that we bargained for. Of course, anyone who has rasied a puppy could have told us how fucked we were from the very beginning, but we’re doing the best we can.
Overall, the puppy, […]

S works for a small independent arts school as a development director, loves her job, and relishes the time she spends with smart, arty high school kids and their equally precocious parents. However, working at a school with limited resources and progressive values, S is called upon to perform duties beyond that of […]

At some point between age 15, when I owned more synth-pop 12″ singles and EPs than I care to admit , and heading off to college, I decided that some of my music was decidedly uncool. After that I spent far too much time learning the genealogy of Lou Barlow’s many side projects […]

Yes, we watched the super bowl. A suspicion of football players is one of the last chips I still carry on my shoulder from high school, but the whole jocks vs. nerds battle seems a little silly at 34. The game also provided a handy excuse for me and S to have Gigi, […]

Since the film adaptation is coming out in March, I thought it was time to re-read Alan Moore and David Lloyd’s V For Vendetta.
While I recognize it’s greatness, I’ve never been a huge fan of Moore’s other masterpiece Watchmen due to Dave Gibbons’ E.C. Comics inspired pencils. I was exposed to a few horror […]

I know this is really old, but Erik Kastner has built a great little script that enables you to spell with Flickr images. Here’s “Pop Astronaut” rendered in the flickrbet. I almost like it better than my current masthead…hmmm.

So, not only is Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack) helming the sequel to the Dark Crystal, Brad Bird (The Iron Giant, The Incredibles) is mulling over an animated version of Will Eisner’s Spirit as his next Pixar project. Is it just me or did my serotonin levels just spike a little bit?

After finishing Octavia Butler’s Fledgling, which was good even though I prefer more evil and less anthropology in my vampire fiction, I’ve picked up David McCullough’s John Adams biography. Since I’m not a huge American history buff, I’m a little surprised at how much I’m enjoying it. Aside from how well written it […]
