I love Phillips Pullman’s His Dark Materials books and am cautiously optimistic about the upcoming film adaptations. If nothing else, I’m really curious to see how a “kid’s movie” with a sharply critical eye towards organized religion and the catholic church will go over in our current culture.

Harriet, one of Charles Darwin’s Galapagos turtles has died at the ripe, old age of 176. Presumably in disgust at the ridiculous proponents of Intelligent Design. Rest in Peace, Harriet.

Charles and Ray Eames‘ film Powers of Ten is profound and inspiring, but when I watched it on YouTube for the 10,000th time, I abruptly remembered that it has a peculiar effect on my balance. Every time I watch it (in classrooms, theaters, at my desk) I start to slip forward and have a […]

Looks like a film version of Michael Chabon’s novel Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay is inching closer to reality with Natalie Portman circling the role of Rosa.
Usually, I’d be afraid of Hollywood fucking up a great book, but Mr. Chabon is involved and hey, Wonder Boys wasn’t half bad.

About the time that high school started and the first of my adolescent identity crises turned me into a sullen, nobody-understands-me troglodyte, I lost contact with my dad. He’d moved back from Hawaii, but I figured that his standing as a good christian and pillar of the community didn’t fit with his fucked-up mess […]

The demo video for Nintendo’s new console is up on You Tube and it has me excited. If the unusual controller scheme works out, this could be a hell of a lot of fun.

Thom Yorke is going to be on The Henry Rollins Show on July 15. I’ve grown obsessed with Mr. Yorke more and more lately, mostly because of his band called Radiohead and forthcoming solo album, which you may have stolen off the internet <looks around, whistles, and tries to act inconspicuous>.
The Eraser is very […]

The next Republican who says the word “democracy” to me gets a punch in the nose…or at least a withering look. Naw, not really, but don’t test me. With the majority of the tech industry lining up behind net neutrality, the arrogance and corruption that this decision demonstrates is breathtaking.
I guess most of […]

Here’s a neat, little story about the Dalai Lama presenting a Tibetan butter lamp to the Hergé Foundation.
Tintin, Captain Haddock, the Thompson Twins, and Professor Calculus hold special places in my childhood imagination and it’s nice to see Hergé get some press beyond the occasional griping about the racism in some of his earliest comics. […]

As we slowly close in on this house purchase, I thought it would be nice to pick up some new art for our bare walls. Just in time, Kevin Dart and Chris Turnham open up the shop at Fleet Street Scandal with loads of beautiful prints for sale.
Chris Turnham’s Legionnaire’s Lament, Chicken Abduction!, and […]
